It's Jinjitsu day today.
"Jinjitsu day" is one of five seasonal festivals in Japan.
(Five festivals are,
Jinjitsu /January 7
Joushi/March 3
Tango/May 5
Shitiseki/July 7
Chouyou/September 9)
There's a traditional habit to have rice porridge with seven kinds of herbs for breakfast on this day in Japan.
Seven herbs are as follows;
Seri(water dropwort)
Nazuna(shepherd's purse)
Gogyo(cudweed)
Hakobera(chickweed)
Hotokenoza(henbit)
Suzuna(turnip)
Suzushiro(daikon radish)
These herbs were chosen with an aim to protect people from evils and bring fortune and longevity.
My husband and I had that rice porridge for supper today. (We overslept this morning and didn't have breakfast!)
Actually, I didn't have that rice porridge with herbs in my childhood. Rice porridge was not satisfying enough for the kids and those herbs smelled too earthy.
